Library Renovation Brings High-Tech Upgrades

The Quincy Public Library opened its newly renovated building to patrons in September, but the Library continues to make improvements. Most recently the Library installed video teleconferencing equipment, three self-checkout kiosks and outdoor lockers for patrons to pick up materials on hold. “These high-tech upgrades increase the Library’s capacity and, more importantly, improve the overall patron experiences,” says Nancy Dolan, Quincy Public Library Executive Director.

The new checkout kiosks allow Library patrons to breeze in and out of the Library with their selections faster than ever before. Patrons simply scan the barcode on their Library card and place their materials on the kiosk; the machine prints a receipt or e-mails return dates directly to the patron. Of course, Library employees will continue to staff the Circulation Desk to help patrons navigate the new system and handle holds and renewals.

Another improvement is the bay outdoor hold lockers under the covered entrance. Patrons who cannot visit the Library during operating hours can now pick up Library materials 24/7. Patrons can browse the online catalogue at www.quincylibrary.org or call 223-1309 to check an item’s availability. Then, call the Library to request the item be placed on hold in one of the lockers. Library staff will provide a code and the patron can pick up the item anytime within the next 14 days.

Finally, Quincy businesses and organizations can access quality video teleconferencing equipment for free at the Library. This will allow local businesses to conduct meetings or trainings with colleagues anywhere in the world. This equipment is not compatible with Skype, Facetime or similar video chat applications. It is solely for business use and connects through the global standards for video teleconferencing.

Businesses, organizations and community members can call 217-223-1309, ext 501 to reserve or inquire about the new equipment and services.
