Every time we women are invited to something we don’t attend on a regular basis, we seem to have a brief moment of panic over what to wear.  And, in times when we are watching every dollar, we visualize everything in our closet and do a mental checklist of whether or not we have something acceptable for the occasion.  Then, we call our sister, mother, or friend to tell us if we are cleared to wear what we already own or if we need to make some time to go shopping.  Here are some simple do’s and don’ts to aid you in your decision:

Suitable attire for each type of Wedding:

  • Informal Daytime or Justice of the Peace wedding: Short dress or suit (business attire is acceptable)
  • Informal or Semi-formal Evening: Cocktail dress
  • Semi-Formal Daytime: Short dress or Pant Suit
  • Formal Daytime: Short dress or suit. Hats and gloves optional.
  • Formal Evening or Black-Tie: Long or dressy short cocktail. Consider a dress with sequins, beading, rhinestones and dress it up with glam accessories and/or a wrap.
  • Ultra-formal or White Tie: Long gown, lots of glitz.  Break out that fur, and wear the good diamonds or pearls.

Do's and Dont's for Her

  • NEVER wear white as it competes with the bride.
  • Don't wear black or sequins during the daytime.
  • Don’t stress over what colors others in the wedding party are wearing. You can't possibly coordinate with everyone in the wedding party.
  • Don’t wear something you go Clubbing in out of respect for your host.  Instead, choose  something feminine and appropriate. If you’re questioning your choice, it probably is inappropriate.
  • Do not wear arm length gloves unless you’re wearing a strapless dress.  Remember to take off your gloves to eat or drink.
  • If your invitation doesn’t specify the type of event, remember these simple rules: wear something floral and feminine for daytime weddings and that trusty little black dress for evening ceremonies.
