The 5th most popular dog breed is the Beagle.

Since 1998 the Beagle has slid in total registrations. It still holds #5 even with the dip in ownership. The most famous Beagle of all time is undoubtedly Peanuts star Snoopy who may have single-handedly brought the breed to the top of the list in the first place.

Originally a kind of foxhound, the Beagle is a great tracker and hunter. Because of this, it should never be allowed out without a leash for this reason, as it will take off on its own. They are friendly, cheerful dogs, known for imitating vultures and chasing Red Barons. Prospective owners, be warned that they are a vocal dog, due to their background on the hunt.
The 5th most popular cat breed is the Abyssinian.

It is said that these pretty cats are descended from those worshipped by the ancient Egyptians-but no one knows for sure. Their coat is ticked with colors. Abyssinians are very active, busy and playful, and they love people.

Choosing the Perfect Dog
What dog fits your lifestyle? Even though it seems logical that a smaller dog would be happier than a larger one in an apartment or condo without a yard, that isn't neccessarilly true. All dogs do need daily exercise and outdoor activity, but some need more than others.

For example, oversized Newfoundlands actually prefer lounging around home and taking leisurely walks. The tiniest of terriers can be extremely rambunctious and need lots of exercise and outdoor stimulation.
